Simple Trick Keeps Cottage Cheese Creamy and Fresh for Days

Cottage cheese is a beloved dairy product in Israel, but consumers often complain about its limited availability, lack of preferred fat percentages like 3%, and rapid loss of freshness after purchase. Recently, shelves have been restocked following shortages, but many still find the cheese loses its creamy texture quickly. A viral tip on social media suggested storing cottage cheese containers upside down in the refrigerator to maintain freshness longer.

To test this, two identical cottage cheese cups with the same expiration date were purchased and stored in the fridge over a weekend, one upright and one inverted. After 48 hours, both appeared fresh and smelled the same, but the inverted container’s cheese was noticeably creamier, more uniform, and free of excess liquid. The upright container’s cheese was thinner and released liquid when scooped.

The science behind this is that cottage cheese is a fresh cheese with high moisture content and open curds, which tend to separate liquid over time, creating a watery layer on top. Storing the container upside down pushes the liquid back into the curds, preserving a richer texture. Additionally, the inverted lid seals more tightly, reducing air exposure and slowing oxidation.

While this method can extend the cheese’s desirable texture, it does not stop eventual spoilage. The article recommends consuming the cheese while fresh or using older cottage cheese in cooking and baking, such as in omelets, pancakes, cheese cakes, or pasta dishes, where texture issues are less noticeable.
