Israeli Defense Deploys Advanced Software and Sensors to Counter Hezbollah Drones in Lebanon
The Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) and the Ministry of Defense are urgently implementing new technological and tactical solutions to counter Hezbollah's advanced explosive drones in southern Lebanon. These drones use fiber optic cables to connect to their operators, making traditional electronic warfare ineffective since they emit no radio signals to jam. To protect soldiers on the front lines, the IDF has deployed extensive physical defense measures, including large nets over strategic bases and positions to physically intercept and destroy incoming drones before they reach targets.
Additionally, troops have been equipped with specialized shotguns and scatter ammunition to shoot down drones at close range, though this is considered a last-resort defense due to the drones' small size and quiet operation. To overcome the operational blind spots, the Israeli military has collaborated with high-tech companies and startups to develop alternative detection systems that do not rely on radio frequencies. These systems integrate multiple sensor types, including acoustic sensors that detect drone engine noise, optical and laser-based cameras scanning the horizon for small low-flying objects, and high-resolution radars capable of tracking objects as small as a dinner plate even without wireless signals.
A key component is software developed by the Israeli company Airwayz, originally used by Miami police to secure FIFA World Cup stadiums from drone threats. This software now integrates data from all sensor types to provide commanders with a unified, real-time aerial threat picture. The goal is to extend the warning time from the current 3-4 seconds to 20-30 seconds, allowing soldiers to take cover or activate countermeasures effectively.
Airwayz's Vice President of Technology, Shay Korianski, emphasized that this increased lead time could dramatically improve battlefield outcomes. Former IDF Cyber Chief Brigadier General Yaron Rosen expressed optimism that these combined systems will soon reduce Hezbollah drone effectiveness and increase Israeli troop survivability. The IDF is racing against time to deploy these advanced defenses amid ongoing threats from Hezbollah's evolving drone capabilities.
