Massive Asteroid Passes Safely Near Earth at 2.6 Million Kilometers
On Saturday morning, a massive asteroid known as 1997 NC1 passed safely near Earth at a distance of approximately 2.6 million kilometers. The space rock, estimated to be between 750 meters and 1.65 kilometers in diameter, is several times larger than the Empire State Building, making it one of the largest near-Earth objects to approach recently. It was first discovered nearly 30 years ago by a tracking system in Hawaii.
The European Space Agency confirmed the asteroid's close approach posed no threat, and NASA reassured the public that 1997 NC1 is not expected to come this close again until at least 2133. Astronomy enthusiasts worldwide observed the event using telescopes and binoculars to spot the small point of light crossing the night sky.
The last time a similarly sized asteroid passed this close was in 2022, when asteroid 1994 PC1 flew near Earth. Space agencies continue to monitor celestial bodies and space debris closely to protect Earth from potential future collisions.
