Experts Warn of Security Risks When Using Public Wi-Fi Networks in Airports and Cafes
Public Wi-Fi networks in places like airports, cafes, and hotels often lack robust security, making users vulnerable to cyberattacks. Unlike home networks that typically use encryption and additional protections, many public Wi-Fi connections are either unencrypted or configured in ways that expose users to risks such as data interception and unauthorized access. Hackers can exploit these vulnerabilities by intercepting data traffic, redirecting users to fake websites, stealing login credentials, or exploiting outdated devices connected to the same network.
A common and effective attack involves setting up fake Wi-Fi hotspots with names resembling legitimate networks, such as "Free Wi-Fi" or "Airport WiFi," tricking users into connecting and unknowingly routing their data through the attacker. Additionally, attackers may join legitimate public networks to exploit device vulnerabilities like file sharing or outdated software. Experts advise disabling sharing options and keeping operating systems and apps updated when using public Wi-Fi.
Even networks protected by a shared password are not necessarily secure, as all users on the network can potentially launch attacks against each other. The safest option is to use cellular data for sensitive activities such as banking or payments. If public Wi-Fi use is unavoidable, users should verify the official network name with staff and avoid connecting to suspicious or generic network names.
Using a Virtual Private Network (VPN) is also recommended, as it encrypts data traffic between the device and the VPN server, reducing the risk of eavesdropping on public networks. While VPNs do not eliminate all threats and do not replace cautious behavior, they add an important layer of protection.
