Israeli Government to Approve Multi-Million Shekel Compensation for Businesses Affected by Extortion
The Israeli government is set to approve a plan proposed by Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich to compensate business owners harmed by extortion schemes, with funds totaling tens of millions of shekels. The initiative aims to provide an economic safety net for those who refuse to pay protection money to criminal groups, helping them cope with financial damages resulting from their resistance.
Ahead of the government discussion, Smotrich released a video sharply criticizing law enforcement agencies for their failure to tackle the extortion problem. He stated, "In the face of the resounding failure of the police, the prosecution, and all law enforcement systems, we are taking responsibility." He emphasized that the government decision is designed to support courageous citizens and businesses who have decided not to yield to extortion demands.
Smotrich explained that the state will intervene even in cases where insurance companies refuse to compensate victims, saying, "When insurance companies are unwilling to pay, we will step in, compensate, and provide a safety net." He urged the public not to succumb to extortion, assuring that the Finance Ministry backs them and that together they will compel law enforcement to eradicate this threat to personal and national security.
