Saudi Arabia Faces Backlash Over Coach Georgios Donis After World Cup Exit
Saudi Arabia's early elimination from the 2022 World Cup has sparked intense scrutiny over the national team's controversial decision to replace coach Hervé Renard with Georgios Donis less than two months before the tournament. Despite Renard leading Saudi Arabia through successful qualification, the Saudi Football Federation dismissed him in April, hoping Donis would reverse the team's poor friendly match results and inject new momentum ahead of the World Cup.
However, Saudi Arabia finished last in Group C without a single win, drawing against Uruguay and Cape Verde and suffering a heavy 4-0 defeat to Spain, scoring only one goal in three matches. Donis, who previously coached Maccabi Tel Aviv and was also dismissed after an underwhelming tenure, struggled to meet expectations and cited limited preparation time and tactical inflexibility as challenges.
The Saudi press, including the leading newspaper Al-Riyadiya, reported that the federation is considering firing Donis after just six games, with former Al-Hilal coach Jorge Jesus among the top candidates to replace him. This potential change signals another rapid shift for a team seeking stability, especially as Saudi Arabia prepares to host the 2034 World Cup.
The coaching controversy is part of a broader debate about the national team's future amid the rapid transformation of the Saudi professional league, which has attracted high-profile foreign players through massive investments. Former national coach Roberto Mancini has repeatedly expressed concerns that many Saudi players receive limited playing time at their clubs due to the influx of foreign stars, potentially harming the national team's long-term development.
While these structural issues remain unresolved, the federation's decision to change coaches shortly before the World Cup continues to be the focal point of criticism following Saudi Arabia's disappointing campaign.
