6.0 Earthquake Strikes Hindu Kush Region, Causing Panic and Damage in Afghanistan and Pakistan

A powerful 6.0 magnitude earthquake struck the Hindu Kush mountain range in Afghanistan on June 27, 2026, sending shockwaves felt as far as Kabul and neighboring countries. The European-Mediterranean Seismological Center reported the quake's epicenter was approximately 100 kilometers underground. While Afghanistan has yet to confirm casualties or damage due to ongoing assessments in remote areas, the tremor caused widespread panic among residents.

Pakistan suffered more severe consequences, especially in the province of Balochistan and the district of Musakhail, where a separate 5.4 magnitude quake had struck hours earlier. Over 20 people were injured, and around 125 homes were damaged or destroyed. Rescue teams dispatched to the affected areas brought tents, food, solar panels, blankets, and medical supplies to assist survivors.

In the Swat district of northwest Pakistan, residents fled their homes in panic, some wearing only their clothes, as the earthquake caused prolonged shaking. Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif expressed deep sorrow over the destruction and ordered emergency services to launch a comprehensive relief operation to provide shelter and medical aid to those affected.

The earthquake's impact also reached parts of North Kashmir, where tremors were felt and authorities began assessing the situation. The incident has raised significant concern among officials in Islamabad, prompting urgent responses to mitigate further harm and support displaced populations.
