Cape Verde’s World Cup run brings Maccabi Tel Aviv another bonus payment
Cape Verde’s historic advance to the World Cup round of 32 on the night between Friday and Saturday, after a 0-0 draw with Saudi Arabia, will bring Maccabi Tel Aviv extra money. The African side’s third draw of the tournament secured six more days in the competition, and that means Maccabi Tel Aviv is set to receive an additional $44,000 because of Gilson Varela.
According to FIFA rules, clubs are entitled to $7,300 per day when a player who spent the previous season with them remains at the World Cup. Since Varela played for Maccabi Tel Aviv last season, the club’s total earnings from him during the tournament will rise to $223,000, assuming Cape Verde is eliminated by Argentina in the next round.
Cape Verde now faces a major match against the world champion Argentina. Varela, a winger who scored against Uruguay, came on in the 61st minute, produced one key pass and did not register a shot on target.
