Norway Stuns Media by Resting Key Stars Against France

Norway’s decision to field a heavily rotated lineup against France in their upcoming World Cup group match sparked surprise and criticism in Norwegian and French media. The game is set for later on June 26, 2026, and will decide first place in the group.

Instead of using his strongest side, Norway coach Ståle Solbakken opted to start with a second-string XI. Local outlet Nettavisen described the move as shocking, while VG called it Solbakken’s “sensational sacrifice” and said the coach had made “the most drastic action of his career.”

The reaction was especially strong because many expected the match to feature a marquee duel between Erling Haaland and Kylian Mbappé. Former France midfielder Christian Karembeu said, “I thought Haaland and Mbappé would play against each other. Everyone expected that.” He added, “I am disappointed. It could have been a more exciting match, but they need to do their best.”
