Restoration Begins at Ancient Jewish Cemetery in Damascus Under Official Protection
An organization working to preserve Syrian Jewish heritage published footage in the past day showing the start of restoration and renovation work at the old Jewish cemetery in Damascus, with the project taking place under government patronage. The cemetery’s neglected graves are now being repaired, according to the group, which described the work as a step toward protecting an important historical site.
Among the graves restored is that of Rabbi Nissim Nadbo, the chief rabbi of Damascus, who was with Israeli spy Eli Cohen in his final moments before Cohen was hanged in the city square in Damascus. The report was published by Roi Kais of Kan 11.
In recent days, unidentified individuals tried to set fires in the cemetery at least twice. Local rescue forces extinguished both blazes, and security at the site was increased afterward.
The Jewish organization behind the renovation wrote, “Honoring the past, restoring dignity to sacred grounds, and ensuring this rich heritage is preserved for the future.” It presented the work as a major step for history and cultural preservation.
