Patrick Schick Retires From Czech Republic Duty After Disappointing World Cup
After a disappointing World Cup campaign, Patrick Schick has announced his retirement from the Czech Republic national team. The Czechs finished last in their group with just one point, despite returning to the global stage 20 years after their first World Cup appearance.
Schick, the Bayer Leverkusen striker seen as the player expected to lead the team forward, did not score in the tournament. He confirmed on Thursday that he is stepping away from international football.
The 29-year-old is best remembered for Euro 2020, when he was one of the tournament’s top scorers with five goals, tied with Cristiano Ronaldo, including a famous effort from midfield against Scotland. He ends his international career with 26 goals in 56 appearances, which puts him third on the Czech Republic’s all-time scoring list.
In an Instagram post, Schick said, "I am leaving proud of what I managed to achieve in the national team shirt. But at the same time, with a feeling that Czech football is capable of much, much more than it has shown in recent years."
