Israel’s committee for reviewing appointments in state companies, headed by retired Supreme Court justice Shulamit Dothan, voided Esther Schreiber’s appointment as director general of the Israel Antiquities Authority. The panel said the tender’s threshold requirements were set below what the law requires, and for that reason the process that selected Schreiber was disqualified.
Dothan informed Heritage Minister Amichai Eliyahu of the decision. The ruling means Schreiber cannot take up the role as chosen through that tender.
National Security Minister Itamar Ben Gvir sharply criticized the decision. He said, "The official reason is 'legal', the real reason is that a religious woman with a headscarf does not fit the deep state. Tell us more about how much you 'care' about the lack of women in the civil service."
