Knesset Gives Final Approval to Law Separating Police Investigations Unit from the State Attorney’s Office
The Knesset plenum approved in second and third readings the bill to amend the Police Ordinance (No. 45), 2026, initiated by MK Moshe Saada (Likud). Forty-three Knesset members supported the proposal, while 39 opposed it.
Under the proposal, the Department for Investigating Police Officers will be established as an independent body within the Ministry of Justice, with a separate budget, and will be authorized to investigate police officers and prosecute them for criminal offenses, including minor offenses. The law, considered one of the judicial overhaul bills, advanced against the position of the Attorney General’s legal adviser, as legal officials assess that it will accelerate the politicization of the police and turn police officers from employees serving the public into employees serving the government of the day.
