At least 17 people were injured overnight Wednesday into Thursday after a car drove into a crowd of Mexican fans celebrating the national team's 3-0 win over the Czech Republic in Cabo San Lucas, in Baja California Sur, Mexico. The victory secured Mexico first place in its group and a place in the next stage of the World Cup, prompting dozens of supporters in green team shirts to take to the streets.
The main road on Lázaro Cárdenas Boulevard was blocked by the gathering, forcing many vehicles to stop. Video posted on social media showed a black car surrounded by fans, some leaning on the hood and windows. Moments later, the driver suddenly accelerated, ran over dozens of celebrants, and fled the scene.
Mexican reports said the driver was detained shortly after the incident. Police, fire crews, and civil defense teams were dispatched, sealed off the area, and began evacuating the injured to hospitals in the region. A post by Guardia Nocturna said 17 people were taken to different hospitals.
Local authorities said all of the injured were in stable condition. Officials have not yet released further details about how the incident unfolded or what charges, if any, the driver may face, and police are continuing their investigation.
