Two powerful earthquakes hit off the coast of Venezuela in quick succession, first a magnitude 7.2 quake and then, shortly afterward, a stronger one measuring 7.5. The US Geological Survey said it was likely that casualties were high and damage extensive. Venezuelan authorities have not yet released official estimates for deaths or injuries.
Interior Minister Diosdado Cabello said on state television that buildings and homes had collapsed. He said authorities were handling the situation with the resources available for security and civilian assistance. The report did not provide details on the extent of the destruction or where the worst damage occurred.
A tsunami warning that had been issued for parts of the Caribbean was later canceled.
