Former Germany midfielder and pundit Bastian Schweinsteiger has triggered controversy in Germany after making stereotypical remarks about Ivory Coast during the national team’s match on the weekend. Before the Group 5 game in Toronto, which Germany won 2-1, he said on the public broadcaster ARD that Ivory Coast plays “African football,” describing it as “a little unconventional at times, a little wild, and not really tactical.”
The 2014 World Cup winner added that Germany should be “prepared for the game to sometimes be unpredictable.” His comments drew criticism on social media and in German media, where he was accused of using racist stereotypes and imagery rooted in colonial-era thinking.
Critics argued that his wording portrayed Black people as physical players only, while ignoring thinking, planning, and tactical understanding. Schweinsteiger did not apologize or try to clarify what he meant, and ARD also made no explanation or response after the backlash.
