Former UFC lightweight star Dustin Poirier, one of the most popular fighters in Dana White’s organization, has become the focus of controversy after a drunken incident that led to his arrest. Poirier, known as “The Diamond,” retired in July after an 18-year career, including 14 years in the UFC, ending with a loss to Max Holloway for the BMF title.
U.S. reports said Poirier was removed from a flight after behaving drunkenly and then threatened police at the airport. He was arrested, later released on bail after a few hours, and a video of the arrest was published on Tuesday showing him shouting at officers, “You bunch of f****s. I’ll fight you right now, come on. It’s going to end badly for you. Coward.” Police at the scene stayed calm, recognized him as a former UFC fighter, and kept their distance.
After one officer drew a Taser, the situation cooled and Poirier was taken to the police station. On Tuesday night, after the video spread, he issued a public apology on social media. “I have reached a point where I need help,” he wrote. “Retirement has not been easy for me, but alcohol is not the answer. Alcohol destroyed my father’s life, and I will not let it destroy mine. My family deserves 100% of me. I am doing my best to focus and move forward the right way.”
Reaction from the fight world was mixed. Some fighters backed Poirier and showed him respect, while others used the incident to attack him, including Colby Covington, who is among the UFC’s most controversial fighters and is no longer with the organization.
