Anthropic, the company behind the Claude AI model, has updated its privacy policy and plans to begin requiring some users to verify their age or identity with official documents. In some cases, users may be asked to upload a passport, ID card, or driver’s license, and may also need to submit a selfie or short video to create a biometric face template.
The new policy is set to take effect on July 8. Company spokesman Michael Asimann said the requirement will not apply to all users, only to “a small group of users” whose accounts have been flagged as suspicious. He said the goal is to let users appeal blocks or restrictions instead of facing automatic account closure.
Anthropic said the identity verification process will be handled by Persona, a company specializing in digital identity checks. However, the company did not say how long the collected biometric data will be stored.
It also remains unclear whether the requirement will apply only to free users or also to paying customers, and whether it will be limited to Claude’s chat service or extended to other products and services. Anthropic has not released additional details about the scope of the policy or the criteria used to flag users for verification.
