France will be without head coach Didier Deschamps for its final World Cup group-stage match against Norway on Friday, after the death of his mother. The French Football Federation announced the news on Wednesday, and Deschamps immediately left the team’s camp in the United States to return to France and be with family and attend the funeral.
In agreement with federation president Philippe Diallo, Deschamps handed day-to-day control of the squad to his trusted assistant Guy Stéphan, who will lead the team until the coach returns. The absence means France will go into a decisive game without its manager on the sideline.
The match with Norway is set to decide first place in the group. Both teams have six points after two rounds, so the contest is a direct showdown for the top spot. France now faces that key fixture under difficult emotional and professional circumstances.
