Leaders of the ultra-Orthodox parties are pressing Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to move immediately on two measures they see as essential to easing the crisis over military draft evasion. Degel HaTorah chairman Moshe Gafni and Shas chairman Aryeh Deri want the government to advance a Basic Law on Torah study and issue an order that would freeze arrests of Haredi draft evaders.
At the same time, coalition chairman Ofir Katz has been speaking with the heads of coalition parties in an effort to build an agreed package of legislation. His goal is to stop the confrontation with the Haredi parties and reach a formula that the coalition can support.
The push reflects the continuing struggle inside the governing bloc over how to handle the Haredi draft issue. The ultra-Orthodox leaders are demanding immediate action, while Katz is trying to broker a broader compromise through a coordinated legislative deal.
No final agreement was reported, and the discussions are aimed at preventing further escalation and restoring stability within the coalition.
