Firefighters and volunteers from the Benjamin area rushed a short time ago to an apartment fire on Rabbi Akiva Street in Modi'in Illit. When crews arrived, they saw heavy smoke coming from the building, which is near a daycare center, and immediately began extinguishing the fire while searching for anyone trapped inside.
During the search, firefighters found one trapped woman and brought her out of the building. The rest of the residents, including families with young children, were told by the incident commander to stay inside their apartments and not enter the smoke-filled stairwell.
Incident commander Reshef Yotam Sela said he saw significant smoke coming from the building and, after assessing the scene, noticed the nearby infant daycare and the risk that smoke could reach it. He said crews quickly worked to put out the fire, rescue the trapped woman, and ventilate heat and smoke from the building. He also used the incident to stress the importance of installing smoke alarms at home.
Police from the Modi'in Illit station, under the West Bank District, were at the scene to maintain public order.
