Soccer coach Kobi Refua is close to returning to the game in one of the most ambitious lower-league projects in recent years, as he nears appointment as the sporting director of Bnei Eilat in Israel’s Liga Bet. The club is expected to be acquired by Ashkelon businessman David Watouri, who will take control of both the senior team and the youth department and is negotiating through Refua’s lawyer and representative, Amir Cohen.
The offer revealed to Refua is highly unusual by Liga Bet standards and could make him one of the highest-paid figures in the division’s history. It includes a three-year contract, an annual salary of 400,000 shekels, a room in a five-star hotel whenever he needs to stay overnight in Eilat, a car and fuel, and broad authority over the entire club.
Under the proposal, Refua would be the dominant figure at the club, with every major decision running through him. He would also decide who the coach will be, while the main objective is to win promotion already in the coming season. If the deal is finalized, he is expected to shift the center of his life to Eilat and could spend much of the week there.
Refua is expected to return to football after a difficult period, having for years refused to work anywhere outside the Israeli Premier League. A source familiar with the details said, “Kobi Refua is a super professional,” adding that he is treating the Eilat opportunity as a major project aimed at bringing the club to the top of Israeli football.
