The IDF said it thwarted an attempted infiltration by sea toward Eilat. The incident was discussed on Tuesday by reserve Col. Hezi Nehama on Radio Galei Israel, where he described the southern city as especially exposed to a major incident.
Nehama said that anyone who understands Eilat’s geography can see its vulnerability. He called it an isolated place with only two roads leading in, near countries where, in his words, there are not many friends of Israel. He said a military commander or Shin Bet officer must think like an enemy and consider practicing a scenario in which access routes to Eilat are cut off.
Asked whether such a scenario is likely to happen tomorrow, Nehama answered no. But he stressed that Israel must still be prepared for it. The comments came in the wake of the reported sea infiltration attempt, which the military said was stopped.
