This recipe from Mor Eliyasi is a one-pot chicken and gnocchi stew designed as a quick, comforting lunch that looks impressive without much effort. It combines juicy chicken pieces, soft gnocchi and a rich sauce that absorbs the flavors, while leaving very little cleanup behind.
The ingredient list calls for 8 to 10 chicken drumsticks, one package of gnocchi, olive oil, 7 garlic cloves, 1 tablespoon sweet paprika, 1/2 teaspoon hot paprika, 1 level teaspoon turmeric, 1 heaping teaspoon salt, 1 teaspoon chicken soup seasoning and chopped parsley.
To prepare it, the chicken is browned in a wide saute pan or Dutch oven suitable for both stovetop and oven. Garlic and spices are added and briefly cooked to release their aroma, then water is poured in to cover the chicken. The pot is brought to a boil, covered and cooked for 1 to 1.5 hours until the chicken is tender and falling apart.
If there is not enough sauce left, more water is added before the gnocchi go in. The pot is shaken to mix, then cooked for a few more minutes until the gnocchi are tender and the sauce thickens. Finally, the pot is transferred to an oven preheated to 190 degrees Celsius to brown the top and deepen the flavor, then finished with parsley and served hot.
