Lamine Yamal has become the center of controversy after Spain’s young star opened his World Cup campaign with a goal in a 4-0 win over Saudi Arabia, then drew attention for what he wore on his boots. The shoes featured the flags of Morocco and Equatorial Guinea, the countries where his parents were born.
The uproar grew after an old video resurfaced showing Yamal celebrating Morocco’s win over Spain at the previous World Cup. Online reactions questioned his loyalty to Spain, with one post asking, “Does he deserve to represent Spain?”
According to reports, Spain’s national team was aware of the specially designed boots in advance and knew he would wear the two flags. Yamal had also considered representing Morocco earlier in his career, which has added to the debate around his public displays of attachment to his family’s background.
Despite the criticism, Spain is expected to keep starting him through the tournament and views him as one of its key players in the push for another title. Yamal has also said he faces abuse from some fans, including racist comments online and in stadiums, where he has reportedly heard chants such as “Go back to Morocco.”
