A social media photo of U.S. Vice President JD Vance has sparked sharp criticism from cybersecurity and information security experts after he was seen using a laptop connected to an access card that did not belong to him. The image also shows Jared Kushner and Qatar’s prime minister, Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al Thani, looking at the screen with him.
According to the report, the card attached to Vance’s laptop appears to be a smart access card, a common secure identification device used by U.S. security personnel. The enlarged image showed that it is the kind of credential that can grant direct access to the U.S. Department of Defense’s computer and information networks, and that use by anyone other than the authorized holder is strictly forbidden.
Experts responding online said they were stunned by the scene and described it as glaring negligence and irresponsibility. One Israeli OSINT specialist wrote on X that “information security experts are tearing their hair out.”
The criticism intensified because Kushner, who no longer holds an official role in the administration and does not have the appropriate clearance, is seen viewing the screen alongside a foreign leader. The photo also indicates that the card they were using belongs to another woman who is not in the image.
