While millions around the world watched Spain’s 4-0 win over Saudi Arabia on Sunday at the World Cup, Al Jazeera focused on Gaza and the Palestinian angle. The Qatari network aired a video report from the Strip showing dozens of residents gathering around improvised screens to watch the match, portraying them as victims of the harsh reality they live in.
One Gaza football fan said Lamine Yamal had become the local hero when football is discussed. "We are a people that loves life and loves football, especially Spanish football," he said. "We support Spain and the Spanish national team in particular. That is why we were so happy and excited to see Barcelona and Spain player Lamine Yamal, when he expressed support for Palestine before the whole world."
Another viewer emphasized not only Yamal’s support but Spain’s broader stance. "All the fans were happy to see Spain score three goals already in the first half against Saudi Arabia, I saw the joy in the children’s eyes," he said. "The reason is the position [taken by Spain] for these children. We love and appreciate everyone who appreciates Palestine. We appreciate everyone who appreciates Gaza."
Yamal became a Palestinian favorite after waving a Palestinian flag during Barcelona’s championship celebrations in May 2026. People close to him described the act as spontaneous, but it triggered extensive media controversy in Israel and criticism from Barcelona coach Hansi Flick. In the Arab world, he received backing and was even depicted in a mural in Gaza.
