Iran’s national team earned one of its most striking results in years on Sunday night, holding powerful Belgium to a heroic 0-0 draw in the second round of the 2026 World Cup. Goalkeeper Alireza Beiranvand was the main reason Iran survived, producing a string of spectacular saves to keep the team alive in the tournament.
But in Iran, sport is also political, especially now, as crucial talks are under way in Switzerland between Iran and the United States over the future of the nuclear deal and sanctions relief. Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf, the speaker of parliament and Iran’s chief negotiator in those talks, quickly used the result for a public message.
Ghalibaf posted a dramatic image from the match on social media, showing Beiranvand and the defenders throwing themselves into blocks to keep the ball away from Belgium’s goal line. Alongside the photo, he wrote: “This is how we defend our country.” The message was aimed especially at Western, and American, audiences, and linked the players’ sacrifice on the pitch to Iran’s military and diplomatic defense of the state during recent confrontations.
The draw was Iran’s second straight point in the tournament after a 2-2 result against New Zealand in its opening match. Iran is second in Group 7 with two points, and on Saturday it will play group leader Egypt in Seattle in a direct battle for first place.
