Minister Gila Gamliel, a member of the political-security cabinet, launched a sharp attack on Supreme Court Justice Isaac Amit on Sunday morning over his recent remarks about the status of Basic Laws and the authority of the political system. In an interview with Yaakov Bardugo and Doron Cohen on Galey Israel radio, she said, “Isaac Amit was exposed today in his nakedness,” adding that his talk of a “political chip” only showed that he has one “100%.”
Gamliel argued that the court should not be able to interfere with Basic Law legislation passed by the Knesset. She said Amit’s comments, which she said suggest the court can strike down Basic Laws and even replace elected representatives, showed that “someone here has completely lost their judgment.” In her words, the justice’s statements are “blatantly anti-democratic.”
She broadened the criticism to what she described as the leadership of the legal system as a whole, saying there is “dangerous intoxication with power” combined with a government legal adviser who holds “unlimited power.” Her remarks came amid a broader public debate over judicial appointments and Supreme Court authority.
At the end of the interview, Gamliel proposed an unusual solution: removing the power of the Supreme Court president to assign judicial panels and handing that authority to an artificial intelligence system. She said such a system would prevent bias or deliberate panel selection in sensitive cases.
