Saudi right-back Saud Abdulhamid, who helped make history in the team’s famous 2-1 opening win over Argentina at the 2022 World Cup, has become the standout player in his national squad. Four years later, he is the first Saudi footballer ever to leave the country for one of Europe’s top five leagues.
At the time of the Qatar tournament, Abdulhamid was still at Al Hilal. He then took the unusual route of moving from the Middle East to Europe, joining AS Roma, where adapting was difficult. He played only eight matches in the 2024/25 season, and Roma sent him on loan to Lens.
That move proved successful for all sides. Lens emerged as one of the surprises of the season in France, challenged Paris Saint-Germain, finished second and won the Coupe de France. Abdulhamid played a major role, scoring three goals and adding seven assists in 31 appearances, including 90 minutes in the cup final against Nice and two assists in the semifinal against Toulouse.
After the cup triumph, he went to the Netherlands for his wedding, but his passport was stolen from his car, leaving him stuck in Amsterdam for several days while the paperwork was sorted out. He eventually linked up with Jurgen Donsis’s squad and is hoping to stand out further and raise his reported value of 9 million euros. So far in the current campaign, he has helped Saudi Arabia keep clean sheets in a 3-0 win over Puerto Rico and a 0-0 draw with strong Senegal, and he also contributed to the 1-1 opening draw with Uruguay.
