Algerian journalist Mustafa Al-Mazouzi triggered international backlash after an on-air monologue in which he claimed Lionel Messi’s goals were protected by a “Jewish lobby.” The remarks came after Algeria lost 3-0 to Argentina in its opening World Cup match, in a game highlighted by Messi’s standout performance.
In the broadcast, Al-Mazouzi said Messi was “protected by the Jewish lobby,” adding that this lobby “controls the world” and operates “like a mafia.” He also attacked FIFA president Gianni Infantino, saying, “Infantino does not want us to do well because we are a country that has dignity, we are a country called Algeria.”
He further argued that his team was being targeted for political reasons, citing Algeria’s positions on Western Sahara and the Palestinian issue. “The Jews are preventing us from winning,” he said, and claimed that even if Algeria had the sporting ability to win the World Cup, “the West and the Jewish lobby would prevent it at any cost.”
The comments, made on June 20, 2026, spread quickly online and drew condemnation in international media and the football world. Many called on FIFA to discipline Al-Mazouzi and the Algerian football association, but FIFA has so far remained silent.
