SanDisk has unveiled a new NVMe SSD series for PlayStation 5, officially certified by Sony, with a striking price tag. The top 8TB model in the Optimus GX PRO 850P line opened for preorders at $2,960, and its full retail price is expected to reach $3,700.
The company says the largest drive can store about 200 games on average. Technically, it uses PCIe 4.0 and delivers read and write speeds of up to 7,300 MB/s. It also includes a built-in heatsink designed specifically for the PS5 storage slot and has been tested and approved for use with both PS5 models currently on the market.
The price is the main headline. In the United States, the 8TB drive costs more than three PlayStation 5 Pro consoles. Even the smaller versions are expensive, with the 2TB model priced at $760, more than a standard PS5 bundle that includes a disc drive.
SanDisk’s launch reflects a broader surge in memory prices, which the article links to global shortages and heavy demand from the artificial intelligence industry. Those pressures are already affecting hardware costs across the gaming sector, after Sony, Microsoft, and Nintendo all raised prices in various markets.
