Curacao earned a stunning 0-0 draw against Ecuador on the night between Saturday and Sunday in the 2026 World Cup, claiming the tiny nation’s first-ever point in the tournament. Much of that result was credited to veteran goalkeeper Eloy Room, who set a new World Cup saves record with 15 stops in a single 90-minute match.
Room, 37, is not widely known globally, but his path has been unusual. He was born in the Netherlands, grew up in Nijmegen, came through NEC Nijmegen’s youth system, played for the senior side, made one appearance for the Netherlands Under-21 team, and was later bought by PSV Eindhoven, where he did not get much of a chance. He is now at Miami in the US second division.
In 2015, Patrick Kluivert, then coaching Curacao, asked Room to switch allegiance and represent the country where his father was born, and he agreed. He became a key figure in bringing in other Dutch-born players and is now Curacao’s all-time appearance leader.
After the Ecuador match, Room broke down in tears and put on a shirt honoring his late friend and former goalkeeping hero Jairzinho, who died seven years ago after suffering a heart attack during a Curacao camp before a match against Haiti in the CONCACAF Nations League. Curacao has one point from two games after losing 7-1 to Germany in its opener, and must beat Ivory Coast in the final round to advance; otherwise it will be eliminated.
