Pakistan’s army chief tells Revolutionary Guards commander, ‘You were not eliminated thanks to me’
The tense negotiations between Iran and the United States, mediated by Pakistan, are faltering. The French newspaper Le Figaro reports that what is delaying a deal is the way Iran is conducting the talks, in particular its inability to communicate directly with the new Supreme Leader, Mojtaba Khamenei.
According to the French report, when Pakistan’s army chief, Asim Munir, arrived in Iran on May 22, he held a meeting with the commander of the Revolutionary Guards, Ahmad Vahidi. Le Figaro said that before the visit began, it had been agreed that the Pakistani army chief would be able to meet with Mojtaba Khamenei in order to finalize the details of the emerging agreement between Washington and Tehran.
The newspaper revealed that when Asim Munir asked Vahidi when he would be able to meet Khamenei, the commander of the Revolutionary Guards replied that this was not possible because the Supreme Leader was still recovering from injuries. The tone of the conversation grew heated, and Pakistan’s army chief even reminded Vahidi that he had not been eliminated by the United States or Israel only thanks to Pakistan’s efforts.
