Ronald Koeman surprised most observers by starting Brian Brobbey for the Netherlands’ match on Saturday night against Sweden, and the decision paid off quickly. The Sunderland striker scored twice in just 17 minutes, finishing off two excellent team moves and giving the Oranje a big result.
Brobbey had barely featured before, playing only five minutes in the Netherlands’ World Cup opener against Japan and not even making the squad in any of the eight qualifying matches. His last official start for the national team came in a 1-1 draw with Bosnia in the Nations League on 19 November 2024, when he scored his first international goal. Crisencio Summerville, who had scored against Japan, was left out of the starting XI, which surprised the Dutch media.
Before kickoff, NOS asked Koeman about the lineup. He said, “I want more offensively,” adding, “There will be small spaces here, and Brobbey is more of a central striker than Donyell Malen. That will allow Malen to play a bit deeper, and on the right Denzel Dumfries can play higher.” Koeman also said Summerville had physical issues, noting that he left training on Thursday and that the team would not take unnecessary risks.
Dutch coverage praised the move, writing that Brobbey immediately justified the trust placed in him. They said everyone was shocked, but described him as the team’s new star, at least in this match, and said Koeman’s choice could prove golden. Brobbey, 24, had scored seven goals and added one assist in 31 Premier League matches last season. His brace lifted his Netherlands tally to three goals, and it also brought up the national team’s 100th World Cup goal.
