A man in Spain has been arrested and could face up to 18 months in prison after allegedly killing a seagull that stole food from his plate at a cafe. The incident happened in the northern coastal city of Gijón and, according to Euro Weekly News, has become one of the country’s most talked-about stories in recent days.
Witnesses said the man was sitting on a cafe terrace when the seagull swooped in and grabbed a pincho, a popular Spanish snack served in bars. He allegedly reacted in anger, grabbed the bird and violently attacked it until it was critically injured. Other customers tried to help, but the seagull died shortly afterward. Police who were called to the scene arrested the suspect on suspicion of animal abuse.
Under Spain’s animal welfare laws, a conviction could bring a sentence of six to 18 months in prison. The case has triggered a wider public argument about animal rights and whether the punishment fits the offense.
Many people condemned the violence as a grossly disproportionate response. Social media users wrote that “the seagull was only looking for food” and said anyone capable of such a severe reaction over a minor incident is alarming. Others argued that authorities move quickly in cases like this while suspects in more serious crimes are often released quickly, and some questioned why Spain enforces a hard line here while allowing practices that harm animals, including bullfighting, to remain legal. In Israel, former Supreme Court Justice Mishael Cheshin is often quoted in debates over animal abuse for saying that cruelty to defenseless animals hardens the heart and can lead to cruelty toward people as well.
