Turkey’s World Cup campaign has collapsed on the back of astonishing missed chances. After losing 1-0 to Paraguay overnight Saturday, the team was eliminated before the final group-stage match despite having reached its third World Cup in history.
The numbers are startling. Across their first two matches against Paraguay and Australia, Turkey produced 62 shots and scored none, one of the worst attacking returns ever recorded and the lowest since shot data began being tracked in 1966. The team also held 75% average possession, yet that dominance did not translate into goals.
The problem was not just volume, but shot quality. Of Turkey’s attempts, 16 of 32 against Paraguay and 16 of 30 against Australia came from outside the penalty area, a very high rate in modern football. Turkey also hit the woodwork once in each match. Against Paraguay, they completed 260 passes in the opponent’s final third, compared with just 27 for Paraguay, but still managed only five shots on target.
Turkey played the second half against Paraguay with a numerical advantage and still failed to score. Arda Guler said afterward, “We apologize. We all play for top clubs and need to look better. We did not score in two games, that is not acceptable.”
