Senegal are trying to recover from a 3-1 opening World Cup loss to France while preparing for a crucial match against Norway, but reports in Sport News Africa say the team is being undermined by financial and logistical failures that could become a “ticking time bomb.” The problems include unpaid player bonuses, poor training-camp conditions in the United States, and coach Pape Thiaw working without a valid contract.
According to the report, promised bonuses for Senegal’s international players have still not been paid, even though the Senegalese federation already received the large prize money from the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations and the payments tied to qualifying for this World Cup. The outlet said players are asking where the money went and whether the issue is starting to damage the dressing room.
There are also complaints about the team hotel, which officials chose as the squad’s base in the United States. Players reportedly say it is not suitable for a team of Senegal’s stature, especially when compared with the much better conditions the federation arranged for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations in Tangier. The team’s chief chef was also barred from traveling, and Sport News Africa said some players now regularly order food from outside the hotel because the catering is mediocre and not appropriate for elite sport.
The report also says some federation officials brought family members and personal entourages to the United States, creating a larger and more expensive delegation at the federation’s expense. The most serious issue may be Thiaw’s situation, he was said to be five months behind on pay before the squad left for camp, and his contract has expired. Despite a public promise from Senegal’s president to resolve the matter, the federation is still reportedly refusing to sign a new deal.
