Ronaldinho could make an unexpected return to football at age 46, according to Italian reports that say he has reached an agreement with Ravenna, a Serie C club in Italy’s third tier. The story, first reported by La Gazzetta dello Sport, comes more than a decade after the 2002 World Cup winner retired in 2015, ending his career as a Fluminense player.
The move is expected to be formally unveiled at a large event in Miami on June 23. Ronaldinho himself fueled the speculation with the message, “New colors, same smile,” adding, “I can’t wait to get back on the pitch and write a new chapter in my story together with Ignazio and the Cipriani family. Football has always been a source of joy for me, and I want to bring that same passion to Ravenna.”
Ravenna owner Ignazio Cipriani called the arrival “absolutely extraordinary” for the club. He said Ronaldinho had been his idol and that his impact on football was greater than his performances on the field. Some Italian media also said Ronaldinho has been taking part in the team’s training camp and could be available to the coaching staff from the start of preseason.
Later reports, however, included denials and said earlier remarks referred only to his role as a shareholder. He may still appear in one symbolic match. Ravenna will also honor him on its new shirt next season, which will carry the letter R alongside R10, Ronaldinho’s well-known logo. Ronaldinho turned professional with Gremio in 1998, then spent a decade in Europe with Paris Saint-Germain, Barcelona and Milan before returning to Brazil, aside from one season at Querétaro in Mexico.
