Switzerland’s foreign ministry said early Friday that planned talks between the United States and Iran would not take place that day in Geneva, after Iran’s delegation announced overnight that it was canceling its trip because of the Israeli strikes in Lebanon.
The White House later said Vice President J.D. Vance would not travel to Switzerland. In a statement, it said that, as Vance had said at his press conference, the schedule for the upcoming technical talks was not final and the American delegation had been ready to depart at the first available opportunity, but the logistics of negotiations had never been simple or predictable. “At this time the vice president is not leaving tonight,” the statement said.
The White House added that it still expected the talks to begin as soon as possible. The canceled Geneva meeting was the latest setback in the planned U.S.-Iran discussions.
