Luka Doncic has sent the Los Angeles Lakers a clear message heading into what he called a “very important summer,” telling Spanish outlet Marca that he needs high-quality shooters and athletic centers around him to maximize his game. The Lakers now appear to be building in that direction.
According to ESPN’s Dave McMenamin, the team has already done substantial background work on several possible roster additions to support Doncic. The list includes young centers, defensive forwards, and veteran players who could fit a championship-level roster.
Among the top targets are Detroit center Jalen Duren and Utah center Walker Kessler, both restricted free agents. They fit Doncic’s preference for centers who “jump, block shots and finish above the rim.” Duren has been one of the standouts for surprising Detroit, with strong rebounding on both ends and efficient finishing in the paint. Kessler is regarded as one of the league’s better rim protectors.
Los Angeles is also evaluating athletic, defensive wings Peyton Watson of Denver and Tari Eason of Houston. Such additions could give Doncic the balance he wants, stronger defenders, transition speed, and better spacing around him.
The Lakers are not limiting themselves to younger options. They are also looking at more established names, including Tobias Harris, Norman Powell, Anfernee Simons, Mitchell Robinson, Coby White, Quentin Grimes, Dean Wade, and Landry Shamet, each of whom could address a different need as the team tries to chase a title.
