Caleb Yirenchi, a 20-year-old Ghanaian midfielder, became an instant national hero overnight after scoring a stoppage-time winner in Ghana’s 1-0 victory over Panama. His goal in the 95th minute came during the 2026 World Cup and made him the youngest player in World Cup history to score a winning goal in added time, at 20 years and 153 days old.
The decisive strike not only secured a valuable win for Ghana, it also set a historic record and turned Yirenchi into one of the tournament’s breakout names. Before the match, reports in Europe said several major clubs were already monitoring the midfielder, and his latest performance is expected to draw even more interest ahead of the summer transfer window.
Yirenchi is a product of Ghana’s Right to Dream academy and joined Danish club Nordsjaelland in 2024. Ghanaian fans had already marked him as a major prospect last year after he impressed in two appearances at the Kirin Cup.
Known as a powerful, technical and versatile player who can operate both centrally and on the wing, Yirenchi has drawn comparisons to Michael Essien, who now coaches him at Nordsjaelland. Yirenchi said of his mentor, “He can coach and influence anyone. We learn so much from him and are grateful he is with us.” His teammate Prince Amuako Junior described him as “a very humble guy who does not think too much of himself, but Caleb is just crazy, he is a superstar and I tell him that all the time.”
