UEFA has punished Marseille for repeated financial fair play violations over the past three years, imposing a €10 million fine after earlier warning the club it could be barred from European competitions.
The French club's transfer balance has reportedly been about €60 million in the red over that period, which prompted UEFA to threaten exclusion from continental tournaments. Instead of immediate expulsion, UEFA allowed Marseille to compete in this season's Europa League, a place it earned through its league finish.
Alongside the fine, Marseille must again try to balance spending with revenue. If it fails to do so, the harsher sanction, removal from European competition, would be applied next season.
