Kylian Mbappé starred for France on Tuesday night at the 2026 World Cup, scoring twice in a 3-1 win over Senegal and helping the defending side produce one of the tournament’s early standout performances. The France captain was described as unstoppable, using his pace and technique to leave Senegal’s defense helpless.
What drew the most attention, however, was his goal celebration. Instead of his usual crossed-arms pose, Mbappé mimed playing a flute in front of the cameras, a celebration he had promised to do before the tournament. The moment quickly spread across social media and became one of the night’s defining images.
The backstory came from an earlier interview with British host James Corden. During a car ride, Mbappé said his parents had pushed him to study music as a child and that he played the flute for two years. Corden then produced a real flute from the back seat and challenged him to play it. Mbappé laughed and promised, “If I score in the next game, I’ll dedicate the flute celebration to you.”
Mbappé delivered on that pledge and also reached a major statistical milestone. His two goals took him to 58 goals for France, moving him past Olivier Giroud to become the national team’s all-time top scorer. He now has 14 World Cup goals, further strengthening his place among the sport’s all-time greats.
