China has introduced a new public-space technology aimed at two summer nuisances at once: mosquitoes and dead phone batteries. The smart street benches are fitted with independent systems for mosquito killing and mobile-device charging.
The mosquito-control mechanism is built into the benches’ legs and uses ultraviolet, or UV, lights to attract insects. When mosquitoes reach the light unit, they are killed immediately by a controlled low-voltage electric discharge that is said to be safe for passersby.
Beyond pest control, the benches also function as public charging stations. They include built-in charging outlets, including wireless charging pads, so people can recharge their phones while sitting in parks and other public areas.
The development is expected to make evening outdoor stays more comfortable and is being presented as a practical addition to modern urban design.
