A senior figure in the Jerusalem Faction says the group is preparing to escalate its fight against advancing Israel's draft legislation, with more surprise demonstrations expected soon. He said the recent unexpected protest, which he described as intended to hurt the economy, was only one part of a broader campaign coordinated with other protest groups.
"The surprise protest that was meant to harm the economy is one of a series of actions planned in cooperation with all the sectors that are taking part in the protests, and they will take place very soon," he said. He added that the faction sees the battle over conscripting yeshiva students as a matter of principle about the future of the Torah world.
"This is a fight to the end, to self-sacrifice, against the terrible decree, the draft decree, which is meant to uproot Torah from Israel," he said. His remarks come as public and political debate continues over drafting ultra-Orthodox Israelis into the IDF.
In recent weeks there have been protests and roadblocks against enforcement measures and summonses for initial draft notices. The Jerusalem Faction has previously said it intends to continue the struggle through different means, and now appears to be gearing up to widen the scale of its demonstrations in the near term.
