FIFA has introduced special patches for selected players at the current World Cup, turning their shirts into tributes to major individual achievements and milestones. The move is part of the tournament’s broader effort to honor the game’s biggest stars, beyond the football itself.
Lionel Messi drew the most attention by wearing a patch marking his sixth World Cup appearance, an unprecedented feat. His patch features the word “Legacy,” and FIFA said the same recognition is also being given to Cristiano Ronaldo and Mexico goalkeeper Guillermo Ochoa, who are likewise competing in their sixth World Cup.
FIFA also highlighted standout performers from the previous World Cup in Qatar with custom designs that identify their awards. France forward Kylian Mbappe wore a patch on his sleeve commemorating his Golden Boot from the last tournament.
Argentina goalkeeper Emiliano “Dibu” Martinez also received a special patch recognizing his Golden Glove award from Qatar. Martinez, a key figure in Argentina’s title run and well known for his crucial saves on the way to the trophy, was given the honor on his shirt as the reigning champions continue at the 2026 World Cup.
