Romano Schmid scored Austria’s opener in the 20th minute against Jordan at the 2026 World Cup, controlling the ball at the edge of the box and curling it into the top-right corner. The 26-year-old midfielders’ finish stood out in a day that also featured big stars such as Kylian Mbappe, Erling Haaland and Lionel Messi.
Beyond the goal itself, Schmid reached a historic milestone. He became only the second Austrian player ever, after Ivica Vastic, to score both in a World Cup and at a European Championship, after finding the net against the Netherlands at the most recent Euros.
Schmid plays for Werder Bremen in Germany, where he has spent most of his career, although rumors of a move to the Premier League have not yet materialized. He has been viewed as a major talent since youth, and former Israel coach and Austrian legend Andy Herzog once described him as “one of Austria’s greatest talents.”
He showed that promise early, scoring within his first 15 minutes for Sturm Graz and becoming the first player born in the 2000s to score in the Austrian Bundesliga. At 1.68 meters, he may be the shortest player in Austria’s squad, but his low center of gravity makes him dangerous in one-on-one situations. Coach Ralf Rangnick typically uses him on the right wing, and Schmid has become a fixture, starting a run of 29 consecutive appearances under the national team manager. Now, Austria’s baby-faced playmaker is carrying the team on the biggest stage.
