A 15-year-old girl from Oklahoma, Leah Pearson, was declared brain dead after trying a dangerous viral TikTok challenge involving Benadryl, an over-the-counter allergy medicine in the United States. According to her family, she swallowed a large amount of the drug in an attempt to hallucinate and soon began convulsing.
Pearson was rushed to hospital in critical condition. Benadryl contains diphenhydramine and is commonly used to treat allergy symptoms, but doctors warned that an overdose can cause seizures, heart rhythm problems, cardiac arrest, respiratory failure and death.
Her father, Richard Pearson, said Leah wanted to be famous on TikTok and had tried the challenge before. This time, shortly after taking the pills, she felt ill. At first, relatives thought she might be having an asthma attack, but doctors later told them she was showing signs of Benadryl overdose.
Her condition deteriorated rapidly. She suffered cardiac arrest, leaving her brain without oxygen for minutes, and doctors later told the family she had no brain activity. While still hoping for a miracle, the family decided to donate her organs, which could help dozens of patients. Her father said he is speaking publicly to warn other parents and teenagers, urging them to monitor what children see online, talk about the dangers, and keep medications secured.
