Singer Michal Releases Hopeful New Single Inspired by War and Family

Michal Friedel-Shtatman has released her debut single, "Petach Lanu Shaar" (Open for Us a Gate), a personal prayer for hope and new beginnings. The song, set to music by her father, Moshe Friedel, uses lyrics from the "Ne'ilah" prayer, traditionally recited at the close of Yom Kippur.

Michal's musical journey takes center stage after nearly three years marked by war, reserve duty, and significant family events. Her life was profoundly impacted by the outbreak of the war just two days before the birth of her first son, Akiva, on October 7. She and the baby were released from the hospital on Simchat Torah, while her husband, Naftali, a captain in the reserves, was immediately called to combat in Gaza. He even performed the "Pidyon HaBen" (redemption of the firstborn son) ceremony from Gaza with his soldiers.

Despite the intense period, which also saw the birth of their second son, Gilad, Michal decided to dedicate more time to music, a passion she has held since childhood. Her path to music was unconventional; she studied law, interned at the Public Defender's office, and became a lawyer. She later transitioned into education and spirituality, moving to Beit She'an to work as a "Ramit" (a spiritual guide or educator) at the "Netah" seminary.

Now, she is returning to her musical roots with "Petach Lanu Shaar," a melody composed by her father to the poignant words "Open for us a gate, at the time of the closing of the gate, for the day is ending." Released ahead of the new year, the single marks Michal's emergence as a vocalist and artist.
